Thomas Ballard resigned from his position as Coffee County School Board Chairman on May 6.
Ballard cited health concerns as the reason for his resignation in an email exchange with County Mayor Dennis Hunt. Ballard recommended Brent Parsley to fill the remainder of Ballard’s term, which expires in August.
Hunt said in his response email that he would retain the email exchange as Ballard’s formal resignation. The email exchange is documented in the agenda packet for the May 12 meeting of the Coffee County Commission.
At the Coffee County Commission meeting on Tuesday, May 12, the commission members were given public notice of the vacancy caused by Ballard’s resignation by the County Clerk. Hunt said that the Commission would vote on whether to fill Ballard’s seat at its June meeting.
“TCA requires vacancies to be filled if they occur more than 120 days prior to the next countywide election,” Hunt said. “We’re well within that 120 days.”
Commissioner Laura Nettles recognized Ballard for his service on the School Board, saying Ballard “did a great job.”
