On July 3, the day before the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, a time capsule will be buried on the grounds of the historic Bedford County Courthouse. Submissions are now being accepted, and will be reviewed by the county archives and by the organizing committee to make the best use of the limited space available. The actual capsule has been ordered and can be viewed as part of a display on the first floor of the historic Bedford County Courthouse, next to the Archives office. The courthouse is located on the square in Shelbyville.

To submit an item, download the submission guidelines and the application form from https://www.bedfordcountytn.gov/departments/time_capsule_submissions.php.

Bring the item, along with a completed application, to the archives office on the first floor of the courthouse. The item must be handed to someone in the archives office; do not leave it on or near the display in the corridor. You will be given a receipt for any item submitted, and it will be returned if not used in the capsule. The archives office is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., and can be reached at 931-735-6916 or archives@bedfordcountytn.org.

The deadline for submissions is 4 p.m. Monday, June 22.

The time capsule will be buried on the south side of the courthouse lawn, in a grassy strip next to the courthouse near the Veterans Memorial Plaza. A kickoff event will be held that day for the 250th anniversary celebration; more information on that event will be released soon.
