Bedford County Schools announced today that Daniel Mendez Hernandez, a junior at Shelbyville Central High School (SCHS) earned a spot on the Nashville Youth Jazz Ensemble (NYJE).
According to its website, NYJE is a “community-based, non-profit organization dedicated to the cause of nurturing the love of jazz among young people in the Middle Tennessee area.” Dr. Richard Ripani directs the ensemble alongside Assistant Director Emily Hartzell and guest clinicians.
Each fall, NYJE holds auditions for spots on two 25-piece big band jazz performance ensembles. Hernandez claimed one of nine trombone spots, placing eighth in the trombone category. He is the first SCHS student to earn a spot on the ensemble. In addition to performing, he will rehearse with the ensemble once a week until April.
NYJE sponsors two NYJE Jazz Fest events each year. One at Trevecca Nazarene University and the other at the Streets of Indian Lake in Hendersonville, Tenn.
