On Thursday, May 14, the Hands-On Science Center will celebrate its new axolotl with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The axolotl is named “Riley”, a name submitted by Nolan Hice in honor of his little brother Riley. Riley passed away last year due to heart complications related to Down Syndrome.
The ribbon cutting event will begin at 11 a.m. The Hands-On Science Center is located at 101 Mitchell Blvd. in Tullahoma.

“You are warmly invited to join us for a very special ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Hands-On Science Center as we introduce our newest resident—our axolotl, Riley.
“This celebration is more than just a welcome; it is a meaningful tribute. The name “Riley” was submitted by Nolan Hice in honor of his little brother, Riley, who passed away last year. Born with heart complications related to Down Syndrome, Riley’s life left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
“Nolan shared that “Riley” felt like the perfect name because it can be for a boy or a girl—just like our axolotl, whose gender will remain a mystery until it turns one year old. Out of the many incredible names submitted, our community chose one with a story behind it—one filled with love, remembrance, and meaning. We are proud to carry Riley’s name forward.
“We are also excited to share that Nolan’s entire grade level will be visiting the Hands-On Science Center for a FREE field trip on May 14, 2026, as part of this special recognition.
“We would be honored to have you join us for this memorable occasion as we celebrate science, community, and a story that will continue to inspire.
“This date is also special, as our Science Advisor, Bill Boss will be celebrating his birthday as he presents a science show to Nolan’s class. This means axolotl cupcakes for everyone!!
“We hope to see you there as we honor Riley’s memory, celebrate Bill’s birthday and welcome a new chapter at the Hands-On Science Center.”
