In a press release on Tuesday Feb. 24, the Estill Springs Police Department said they did not find probable cause to arrest a homeowner accused of brandishing a handgun at cub scouts who knocked on the door of his residence on Wednesday, Feb. 18.

On February 18, 2026, the Estill Springs Police Department received a report that members of a local Cub Scout troop were going door-to-door in Estill Springs distributing fliers for a food drive as part of earning a merit patch. While visiting one residence, the scout leader and several children knocked on the door. It was reported that the homeowner answered while brandishing a handgun equipped with a strobing light and that the weapon was pointed in the direction of the children.
Officers took multiple statements from the adults who were accompanying the children and initiated an investigation. The homeowner was contacted and reported that he used only a flashlight to see who was at the door, and that no firearm was present.
It is our responsibility to pursue all avenues and conduct due diligence when investigating any complaint. The information gathered during this investigation was presented to the District Attorney’s Office for review. After discussing the case, it was determined that there was not sufficient probable cause to pursue a criminal indictment.
We understand that not everyone will be satisfied with this outcome. However, we have offered to partner with the Cub Scouts to host future community events that provide a safe and positive environment for scouts to interact with local residents.
