Steven “Steve” H. Winstead, age 73, a native of Manchester, Tennessee, passed away on August 25, 2026. He was born July 12, 1953, in Tullahoma, Tennessee, to William Harold Winstead and Mary Elaine (Midgley) Winstead.
Steve shared 52 years of marriage with his wife, Pamela Faye (Fletcher) Winstead. Together, they built a family that remained at the center of his life.
Steve spent many years in the corporate world and retired from SAIC, where he worked as a Corporate Project Manager, but retirement certainly didn’t mean sitting still. He returned to one of the things he had loved since he was a young man, working on cars. At Speedy’s Auto Body, Steve rebuilt cars, with classic cars holding a special place in his heart.
Music was another one of the great passions of his life. If there was music to be played, Steve wanted to be there. A talented musician, Steve played with numerous bands throughout the years and rarely passed up an opportunity to pick up his bass and play. The friendships he made through music and the time he spent on stage brought him tremendous joy.
Steve was immensely proud of his recovery and recently celebrated ten years of sobriety on July 17, 2026. His recovery community and the friendships he built through Serenity House became an important part of his life.
Steve is survived by his wife of 52 years, Pamela Faye (Fletcher) Winstead; daughters, Karrah Elaine Winstead and Klarisa Faye Winstead, and son-in-law, Jim Ray Kochans; grandson, Tyler Lee Walker; granddaughter, Kaedyn Raye Kochans; mother, Mary Elaine (Midgley) Winstead; brothers, Scott Winstead and Curtis Winstead; nieces, Jillian (Winstead) Abed and Jenna Winstead; nephews, Cale Winstead, Dylan Winstead, and Kyle Fletcher; along with many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members, friends, fellow musicians, and members of his recovery community.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Harold Winstead, and his eldest daughter, Krista Lee (Winstead) Kochans.
Steve will be remembered for many things, but perhaps most of all for the things he refused to stop doing: loving his family, working with his hands, showing up for the people who mattered to him, and playing the music he loved.
Visitation will be held Sunday, August 30, 2026, from 12:00pm until 2:00pm with funeral services to be held following visitation at 2:00pm in the chapel of Central Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Welker Cemetery in New Union.
