On Thursday, Nov. 20, the Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE) announced important dates for its Education Freedom Scholarship (EFS).
According to tn.gov, the EFS program encourages “interested families across the state to apply for the universal school choice program that allows parents to choose the school that best fits their child’s needs, regardless of income level or zip code.”
The key dates for those looking to apply are listed below:
- December 9: application for renewal opens for students currently receiving the EFS scholarship
- January 13: application opens for new EFS applications
- January 30: application closes for all applications
Students who applied for EFS last year and were denied are considered new applicants for the 2026-2027 school year.
This is the program’s second year of implementation. Last year, it saw 42,827 applications from families across 94 of Tennessee’s 95 counties.
