Tennessee shoppers will have the opportunity to save money on back-to-school purchases during the state’s annual Sales Tax Holiday, which begins Friday, July 31, and runs through Sunday, Aug. 2.
During the three-day tax-free weekend, shoppers will not pay state or local sales tax on many back-to-school essentials, including qualifying clothing, school supplies and computers. The annual event, now in its 20th year, is designed to help families prepare for the upcoming school year while reducing the cost of essential purchases.
The following items qualify for the tax exemption:
- Clothing priced at $100 or less per item, including shirts, pants, dresses, shoes and school uniforms.
- School supplies priced at $100 or less per item, including notebooks, paper, pencils, pens, crayons, backpacks and other classroom necessities.
- Computers priced at $1,500 or less, including laptops and desktop computers purchased for personal use. Certain computer accessories purchased with a qualifying computer are also eligible.
The tax exemption also applies to qualifying items purchased online, as long as they are bought during the holiday period and are intended for personal use rather than business purposes.
Tennessee’s Sales Tax Holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 31, and ends at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2. State officials encourage shoppers to review the full list of qualifying and non-qualifying items before making purchases to maximize their savings.
