Manchester’s Veterans of Foreign Wars All-American Post 10904 Commander Kimberly King is pleased to announce the kick-off of this year’s VFW Smart/Maher Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year nomination period.
Without our nation’s veterans, America wouldn’t be the great nation it is today. Our youth deserve to learn about our rich history, traditions and the role of our veterans in creating and shaping America. Each year, the Veterans of Foreign Wars selects elementary, middle, and high school teachers to participate in this program.
Current certified/licensed teachers of grades K-12 can be nominated by fellow teachers, students, family members, other interested individuals, or even nominate themselves. Teachers who promote civic responsibility, flag etiquette and patriotism, and strive to help students develop a better understanding of democratic values and beliefs, are prime candidates for this award. Nominations are to be submitted to the local VFW Post.
Nominated teachers compete at the local VFW Post level with one winner in each of the K-5, 6-8 and 9-12 grade levels advancing to the District level competition; with those winners advancing to the State level. First Place State Teachers of the Year then advance to VFW National Headquarters for final competition at the national level.
The VFW enacted the Teacher of the Year program in 1999 as a way to identify and recognize America’s best educators, annually recognizing the nation’s top teachers who instill a sense of national pride in students by regularly teaching citizenship education topics and promoting America’s history and traditions effectively.
